Cheryl Stickler
Head Teacher
Haatlaakw yoo xat duwasaakw Tlingit xeinaax. (In Tlingit, my name is Haatlaakw which means “everyone’s auntie.”) In Tlingit tradition, the uncles and aunts are responsible for the education of the children. It is a great honor to have this name.
When I received an opportunity to teach in Klukwan in 1999, it was like “coming home.” My family lived in the Chilkat Valley early in my life, and I thought I was prepared to come back. Little did I understand the overwhelming generosity of the Chilkat Tlingits in Klukwan who welcomed my family and me into their village and culture.
While my teaching duties are with middle school and high school students in history, language arts, and high school math, I also have the pleasure of working with all of the students in grades pre-school through 12 in my role as the head teacher. The Klukwan students are strong individuals who have the courage to dream and work toward their goals. The students embody our school motto, “Yee gu.aa yax x’wan.” (Be strong. Have courage.)

Ruth Ryan
I received my teaching degree and M.Ed from UAS, and have been teaching since 1995. At Klukwan, I’m working with students in a multi-grade primary class of pre-school through second grade. Instilling a love for learning and providing the tools to be successful are two of the most important goals we educators can strive toward. With strong community support from Klukwan, we are able to provide students with a quality learning environment that supports their success. As we learn to work together in our class, we are thankful for the wisdom of Tlingit elder, Joe Hotch. He said, “You must be careful to choose your words wisely. Your words are like a stick. You can use it to help pull someone up, or you can use it to hold someone down.“ We try daily to support one another as we grow and learn.
