Hey, We like seal!
A
little more about me:
I teach middle school math, middle school science, high school outdoor survival skills and I also team teach a middle school life skills class with Miss Emily. I am also the High School track and cross-county coach.
I am a graduate of the University of South Alabama where I received a degree in geology and ran on the schoolŐs track and cross-country teams. I love to climb mountains and explore remote mountainous regions. I worked as a geologist for several years with an Alaska Native Corporation and moved to Angoon in July of 2003. I began teaching in 2003/2004. I love it!
Math:
Teaching to multiple personalities and many different
levels can be quite the challenge.
At Angoon Middle School, no one gets left out! We learn about all sorts of things and try to relate as much
material to the real world as possible.
We like to simplify fractions, solve algebra problems, convert between
metric and English systems, calculate how much gas one needs to bring with them
if headed to different locations all over SE Alaska and things like this. Hey, you name it and we learn about
it. We are all striving to be
life-long learners.
Science:
We love science here in Angoon. I mean, who doesnŐt, right? Science rocks! (Especially geology. Yeah, the pun is intended) We really like to take a hands-on approach and learn by doing. This year the students spent quite a bit of time assisting me with trapping. Some places send off for samples to dissect. Not in my room. If we want to cut it up, we catch or kill ourselves. No wimps here. After we successfully trap animals we skin them using the casing method and then the students assist as we stretch and tan the hides. We have worked on mink, marten, land otter, beaver, seal, and deer. Once we are finished skinning these critters, we use the carcasses to dissect them and learn all about what makes these animals click. We also like to utilize our proximity to the beach and go on lots of beach walks and learn about sea life. We even dissect shellfish such as crab, clams and cockles. Students are always amazed with a crabŐs gill rake. We learn about all sorts of things but space, weather, biology and geology are the favorites.

Outdoor Survival Skills:
Want to learn about knots, snow caves, trapping, hunting, fishing, boating, rappelling, shelter building, orienteering, camping, fire building and tricks to staying warm? Then ask a student who has taken my H.S. Outdoor Survival skills class and they will be able to tell you.
Middle
School Life Skills:
In this class, Miss Emily and I teach the students the things that they need to survive in life. We teach art, home economics, drug and alcohol education, auto and wood shops, guest speakers and fun things like these. This class takes place the last hour and a half of the day and is a great way to wrap-up a school day.
