Mrs. Nicole Bowen interviewed Kurt Foxglove, a Freshman, during the Mock Job Interview at the Angoon High School last May 1st, 2025.

Angoon High School successfully held its second annual Summer Job Fair from May 1–3, continuing its mission to prepare students for real-world employment opportunities. Open to all students ages 14 and up, the three-day event combined job readiness training with hands-on experience in applying for summer positions within the community.

The event began on Thursday, May 1, with Mock Job Interviews, where students practiced their interview skills in a realistic setting. Parents and teachers volunteered as interviewers, helping students build confidence and receive constructive feedback. This activity supported the career portfolio work students had been developing in class and gave them a valuable glimpse into the hiring process.

On Friday, May 2, the school hosted a Summer Job Fair Forum, where students had the chance to meet with potential employers and set up interview times for available positions. The forum served as a bridge between preparation and real-world job placement.

The final phase of the fair took place on Saturday, May 3, with Final Job Interviews. Students interviewed for real positions with our partner organizations and local employers. Job partners included:

  • Alaska Youth Stewards

  • Angoon City Office

  • Angoon Community Association

  • Angoon Schools

  • Eagle Espresso

  • Favorite Bay Lodge

  • Guide Academy Kotznoowoo Inc.

  • Hydroponics Garden

  • See Stories

A key partner in this initiative was the Tlingit & Haida Youth Employment Services (YES) Program, which provides paid workforce training for Tribal Youth (ages 14–24). The YES Program connects youth with host mentors in fields such as customer service, clerical work, manual labor, and skilled trades. The program promotes self-sufficiency and career exploration while helping students develop valuable job skills.

Sunnie Duncan from the Angoon Community Association (ACA) shared her positive experience with the student interviews:

“We interviewed a total of seven students, six in person and one over the phone. I just wanted to let you guys know they did a super awesome job, very respectful and did not hesitate to ask any questions. Everyone showed up on time, even early at that. I was very impressed with the individuals interested in the laborer position at the ACA.”

This year’s job fair builds on the success of last year’s event and reflects Angoon High School’s ongoing commitment to student growth and community collaboration. We’re proud of our students for taking steps toward their future and grateful to all our partners—and to the parents and teachers who volunteered their time—for supporting youth development in Angoon.
