Moose: image from Beginning Tlingit Workbook

Dear Families,

We are working on moose tomorrow!

On Friday, our school received a sublegal moose. In order to make sure that the meat was taken care of soon enough, staff and a few volunteers butchered and cut the meat on Friday and Saturday. Tomorrow, Monday 9/22, Moose Camp will begin! This year, we will work on weighing and packaging the meat with students and reviewing Tlingit protocols and values.

If you are able to help out, please join us!  Also, if you have a meat grinder, vacuum sealer, or scale we’d really appreciate being able to borrow it. We hope to have everything ready to start at 9:30am.

If you are concerned about your child participating in moose camp, please contact the school at (907) 767-5551. Please be aware, children can opt out, take breaks, and will not be permitted to use knives during this camp.

We are so very grateful for this gift of meat to feed our students, and for this learning opportunity. Many, many thanks go to the hunter, to Val for guiding us in the butchering process, and to the staff and volunteers who have helped us thus far.

Gunalchéesh,

Justina Hotch
